Can AMSR Be Used To Treat Anxiety and Depression

It’s no wonder that some people find certain noises to be extremely relaxing. Waves breaking on the beach or birds tweeting in the forest are frequently played at wellness centres because they are soothing. Some people, however, prefer more unusual soundtracks, such as whispering or crunching shards of soap, to achieve a sense of peace.

When people hear particular noises or observe specific activities, they get a tingling sensation in their scalp, back of neck, and even down their limbs. This is known as ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response. People who respond to ASMR claim it makes them feel relaxed and serene, and some have even referred to it as “brain orgasm.”

There hasn’t been much research done on ASMR, but a small study out of Swansea University in the UK found that there are four main triggers — whispering, personal attention, crisp sounds, and slow movements — and that the majority of participants (80%) said it improved their mood, while 69 percent said it helped them cope with moderate to severe depression symptoms. He claims that some people think of it as a type of treatment since it contains parts that are comparable to mindfulness meditation, which has been shown to help people relax.

“People focus on an outward image or an interior sensation in meditation, and it’s this focused attention that allows them to filter out the outer world,” Smith explained. “It’s been proven to aid with anxiety and depression.” People who engage in ASMR experience tingling feelings while focusing on films or repeating noises, allowing them to filter out the outside world.”

Experts, on the other hand, are hesitant to recommend it as a treatment for anxiety or depression.

“ASMR is clearly not the key to curing sadness and anxiety,” says Stephen Smith, a psychology professor at the University of Winnipeg who has examined ASMR people’s neurological connections. “It might benefit some people as a supplement to real treatment, but it shouldn’t be used instead of consulting a competent professional,” says the author.
